Here are 7 questions to ask before starting a change project...
Why do we want to ask these questions - because it is important to understand where we have levers and where we don't.
We can expect people in an organization to change their behavior individually if we as an organization can't enable them.
In my experience working on culture change and transformation projects - both internally and now running my consulting company - one of the biggest points of failure for organizations is putting all the responsibility of the change on the individual employee or over-relying on training alone as a way to change behavior.
This seems to be a repeating theme and while many people who work on change talk about behaviors, few understand what drivers them.
Change is not a one way street when it comes to an organization - so please be honest with your employees, stakeholders and clients about what you can and can’t enable for them before you start any initiative.
Here are the 7 questions:
1. Can we change the incentives?
2. Can we change policies, processes, and the system?
3. Can we change how decisions are made?
4. Can we change the environment
5. Can we change how we communicate?
6. Can we change the information we provide and how we provide it?
7. Can we change how help develop skills?
What do you think about the questions, are there any missing?
